Balanced ways of eating have the potential to raise our well-being and our health. Conversely, malnutrition and overnutrition lead to health limitations and, in the end, to illness and death. This module deals with the most common and most relevant diet-related diseases – and with the nutritional therapy that comes into play with them.

What you learn

  • The influence of nutrition on health – with a look at the situation in Switzerland
  • National and international strategies against non-communicable diseases
  • Gut health as a chapter in its own right
  • Health-promoting ways of eating: Mediterranean diet and DASH diet
  • Further models compared: the dietary recommendations of the USA, the Healthy Eating Pyramid according to Willett, the Longevita diet
  • Diet-related diseases and their therapy: lipid metabolism disorders, fatty liver, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease
  • Special nutrition in gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance and fructose malabsorption
  • Recognising food allergies and taking them into account in counselling

Who the workshop suits

The workshop suits trainers, personal trainers and advisers who regularly meet diabetes, raised blood lipid levels or intolerances among their clients and want to know what lies behind them. It is one module of the Nutrition Coach training programme and it also makes sense when you want to draw the limits of your own competence cleanly and refer on to a specialist in good time.

How the workshop runs

The Nutrition Workshop - Nutrition and Disease consists of guided self-study e-learning (approx. 30 – 40 hours). After registration you receive the login details for the learning platform, which guides you through the workshop step by step. The learning happens online, free of fixed times and places.

  • Self-study with the course script Nutrition and Disease
  • The complete script also as audio files to listen to
  • Learning videos and flashcards on the most important reference values
  • A folder with background material: the Swiss nutrition strategy and the NCD strategy, WHO papers, the BAG fact sheet as well as cited studies on the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet – for going deeper, not relevant for the test
  • Knowledge test with 30 randomly selected questions in a maximum of 30 minutes, passed with more than 80 per cent correct answers, up to three attempts

Before the knowledge test you fill in the feedback form. For questions about the content, the training team of the update Akademie is there for you. Once you have passed the knowledge test, you receive the confirmation by e-mail within seven days.

Where things go from here

If the foundation for this module is missing, the Nutrition Fundamentals workshop is the right run-up; for putting things into practice in conversation, the Nutrition Counselling workshop follows. All the modules together form the Nutrition Coach training programme. The page on Nutrition Workshops offers an overview of all the individual courses.
