The nutrition module is the core element of the course. Here you acquire broad basic knowledge of macronutrients, minerals and vitamins. Intake recommendations are covered, and the needs of different population groups are addressed. The knowledge is deepened by looking at current nutrition trends and by defining terms such as superfood and functional food.

What you learn

  • Macronutrients: function, requirement and significance in everyday nutrition
  • Minerals and vitamins – what the body needs them for
  • Knowing intake recommendations and transferring them to concrete situations
  • Placing the needs of different population groups in context
  • Assessing vegetarian and vegan nutrition on the basis of the reports of the Eidgenössische Ernährungskommission (Federal Commission for Nutrition)
  • Nutrition around pregnancy and breastfeeding as a topic in its own right
  • Reading and applying the SGE food pyramid and the food pyramid for athletes
  • Placing current nutrition trends in context and defining superfood and functional food cleanly

Who the workshop suits

The workshop suits trainers, instructors and advisers who are asked nutrition questions all day long and want to answer them on a sound professional footing. Because it bundles the basic knowledge of the entire nutrition training programme, it is also the sensible way in if you want to take the further nutrition workshops individually.

How the workshop runs

The Nutrition Workshop - Nutrition Fundamentals consists of guided self-study e-learning (approx. 30 – 40 hours). After registration you receive the login details for the learning platform, which guides you through the workshop step by step. You learn online, free of fixed times and places and at your own pace.

  • Self-study with the course script Nutrition – its content alone is relevant for the knowledge test
  • The complete script also as an audio version that you can listen to like a podcast
  • Learning videos and flashcards on the most important reference values
  • A folder with background material: the Schweizerischer Ernährungsbericht (Swiss nutrition report), the EEK reports on vegetarian and vegan nutrition, the expert report on the SGE food pyramid and further cited studies – for going deeper, not relevant for the test
  • Knowledge test with 30 randomly selected questions in a maximum of 30 minutes, passed with more than 80 per cent correct answers, up to three attempts

Before the knowledge test you fill in a short feedback form. If you have questions about the content, the training team of the update Akademie is there for you. Once you have passed the knowledge test, the confirmation reaches you by e-mail within seven days.

Where things go from here

With the basic knowledge behind you, the modules that build on it are worth taking: the Nutrition and Disease workshop shows what malnutrition and overnutrition trigger, and the Nutrients workshop goes deeper into macronutrients and micronutrients from a sporting perspective. All the modules together make up the Nutrition Coach training programme. The page on Nutrition Workshops gives an overview of the individually bookable courses.

Frequently asked questions

Which topics does the Nutrition Fundamentals workshop cover?

At the centre are the macronutrients as well as minerals and vitamins. Added to that are intake recommendations and the needs of different population groups. A further part places current nutrition trends in context and defines terms such as superfood and functional food.

Are scientific sources included in the course?

Yes. The learning platform holds a folder with background material: among other things the Schweizerischer Ernährungsbericht (Swiss nutrition report), the reports of the Eidgenössische Ernährungskommission on vegetarian and vegan nutrition, the expert report on the SGE food pyramid and the food pyramid for athletes. These texts serve a better understanding and are not relevant for the test.

Can I do the workshop alongside a job and a family?

The workshop is set up as guided self-study and takes around 30 to 40 hours, which you divide up freely. There are no fixed dates: you start when you want and learn online wherever you want. Because the complete script also exists as an audio version, part of it can be listened to on the move.

How do I complete the workshop?

After the feedback form the knowledge test is unlocked. It comprises 30 randomly selected questions from all topic areas, lasts a maximum of 30 minutes and counts as passed with more than 80 per cent correct answers. Up to three attempts are possible, and the confirmation follows by e-mail within seven days.
