Training in the heat: how to protect yourself in summer

Summer, sunshine – and still in the mood for your workout? That's great! But training in the heat brings particular challenges with it. High temperatures and direct sunlight can put a heavy strain on the body and, in the worst case, even be harmful to health. So that you train safely and effectively even in summery conditions, possibly also during your summer holidays in the South, you will find the most important tips and info here.

Why training in the heat is particularly challenging

At high temperatures your body has to not only deliver the normal training performance but at the same time provide cooling. The result: your cardiovascular system works at full speed, you sweat more and thereby lose fluids and minerals more quickly. This can lead to dehydration, circulatory problems or, in the worst case, heat stroke. That's why it's important to plan your training in the heat well and adapt it to the conditions

The most important warning signs of overexertion

Even if you are motivated, you should pay attention to your body's signals. These warning signs indicate that you should immediately take a break or stop the training:

  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Muscle cramps
  • Excessive sweating or sudden cessation of sweating
  • Red, hot and dry skin

If one of these symptoms occurs, it means: get out of the sun immediately, sit or lie down and drink plenty. When in doubt, you should seek medical help.

Top tips for safe training in summer

So that you can still enjoy your training in the heat, these simple adjustments help you:

✅ Choose the right time of day: It's best to train early in the morning or in the later evening, when the temperatures are more pleasant. You should definitely avoid the midday heat.

✅ Adjust the intensity: Reduce the training intensity and allow yourself more breaks. In the heat your body has more to do anyway.

✅ Wear suitable clothing: Light, breathable and light-coloured clothing helps to regulate body temperature. A cap or headband also protects against direct sunlight.

✅ Use shade & ventilation: Train in the shade whenever possible or choose routes with lots of trees. Light breezes are your friends too.

✅ Don't forget sun protection: Protect your skin with waterproof sunscreen – even under a cloudy sky.

✅ Pay attention to your hydration: Make sure a water bottle is always within reach.

Hydration & nutrition: what you should pay attention to

A central point in training in the heat is fluid intake. Here are a few tips so that you stay well hydrated:

  • Drink enough water already before the training.
  • During the workout, drink small amounts regularly – water or isotonic drinks are ideal.
  • Make sure to replenish fluids and electrolytes again after the training too.

👉 Besides sodium (salt), potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride are above all important. These minerals ensure that your fluid balance stays in equilibrium and that your muscles work smoothly. In summer, isotonic drinks or simple home remedies such as a glass of water with a pinch of salt and a dash of lemon juice can be a good solution.

Indoor & alternative training: your options in extreme heat

Sometimes it is simply too hot to train outdoors. Then these alternatives are ideal:

🏋️ Indoor workouts: An air-conditioned gym is the simplest solution. Home workouts with bodyweight exercises are also a good option.

🏊 Swimming: Perfect for summer – easy on the joints, cooling and yet effective. But be careful: especially when swimming in the sea at midday, you often don't notice how strongly the sun is actually burning. Because of the cooling water the heat is underestimated – a sunburn happens quickly.

🧘 Yoga, Pilates & Mobility: On hot days you can put your mobility and body control in the foreground.

Conclusion:

Training in the heat doesn't have to be a no-go – with the right measures you can stay active even in the warm season and keep improving your fitness. Pay close attention to your body's signals, adapt your training flexibly and enjoy the summer in a healthy way.
