Nutrition Workshop - Diagnostics and Assessment
Measure body data, determine energy requirements, build a structured assessment
Body measurement, energy requirements and dietary assessment: learn which parameters you record, how you evaluate them and how counselling grows from them.

Diagnostics record the relevant parameters, and those parameters matter both for planning measures and for checking whether the measures work. In the assessment you bring this data together so that the survey stays structured and complete. Assessment and diagnostics therefore form the basis for how you proceed in a consultation and for planning individual measures. The workshop shows you which measurement methods exist, what they achieve and where their limits lie.
What you learn
- Placing body measurements in context: BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio
- Circumference measurements and skinfold thickness as methods of body composition
- Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and body fat scales – what they measure and what they do not
- Distinguishing the components of energy requirement
- Measuring, calculating and estimating energy requirement
- Building a dietary assessment from the first question through to the evaluation
- Knowing the dietary survey methods and choosing the one that suits each situation
- Bringing recorded data together so that individual measures follow from it
Who the workshop suits
The workshop is aimed at fitness and personal trainers, group fitness instructors and advisers who want to base their nutrition counselling on recorded data rather than on impressions. It is one module of the Nutrition Coach training programme and can be taken on its own – for instance when you already advise clients but have so far done the initial survey on gut feeling.
How the workshop runs
The Nutrition Workshop - Diagnostics and Assessment consists of guided self-study e-learning (approx. 20 – 30 hours). After registration you receive the login details for the learning platform, which guides you through the workshop step by step. You set the pace and the timing yourself, and the learning happens online.
- Self-study with the course script Diagnostics and Assessment
- The complete script also as audio files – to listen to while out and about
- Learning videos and flashcards on the most important reference values
- Feedback to the update Akademie through the feedback form, followed by the knowledge test
- Knowledge test with 30 randomly selected questions in a maximum of 30 minutes, passed with more than 80 per cent correct answers, up to three attempts
If you have questions about the content, the training team of the update Akademie is there for you. Once you have passed the knowledge test, the workshop confirmation reaches you by e-mail within seven days.
Where things go from here
Diagnostics and assessment stand at the beginning of every counselling process – the next logical step is building the conversation itself in the Nutrition Counselling workshop. The subject foundation for it comes from the Nutrition Fundamentals workshop. Both modules are part of the Nutrition Coach training programme. You will find all the other individual workshops in the overview of Nutrition Workshops.

Frequently asked questions
Which measurement methods does the workshop cover?
The workshop works through the common methods one by one: BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio, circumference measurements, skinfold thickness, bioelectrical impedance analysis and body fat scales. For each method you learn what it can tell you and where its limits lie. On top of that comes the determination of energy requirement through measurement, calculation and estimation.
Does the workshop belong to a larger training programme?
Yes. Diagnostics and Assessment is one of the modules of the Nutrition Coach training programme and can also be taken on its own as a workshop. In terms of content it connects directly to the modules Nutrition Fundamentals and Nutrition Counselling.
How long do I have access to the content?
You learn free of fixed times and places, at your own pace. The content on the learning platform stays available to you after you have finished, so you can look up measurement or survey methods later on.
How do I complete the workshop?
You first fill in the feedback form on the learning platform, after which the knowledge test is unlocked. It consists of 30 randomly selected questions from all topic areas and lasts a maximum of 30 minutes. It is passed with more than 80 per cent correct answers, and up to three attempts are possible. The confirmation arrives by e-mail within seven days.
