Fitness career ladder: what does a specialist in movement and health promotion?

The days when fitness trainers were dismissed as mere hobby athletes lifting a few dumbbells on the side are definitively over in Switzerland. The fitness and health sector has become massively more professional in recent years. With the growing awareness of prevention and health in the population, the demands on the supervising specialist staff are also rising.

The specialist in movement and health promotion is currently the gold standard for non-academic fitness professions in Switzerland. But is the time and financial effort of this demanding continuing education worth it?

In this article, we shed light on the career ladder in the fitness sector and show you with uncompromising transparency what salary you can really expect as a specialist.

What is a specialist in movement and health promotion?

Before we talk about numbers, we have to understand the value of this title. The specialist in movement and health promotion is a state-recognised qualification at the tertiary level.

The specialist in movement and health promotion is qualified to supervise people with minor health limitations (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or back problems) on an interdisciplinary basis. They know how to plan complex lifestyle interventions, build networks with doctors and physiotherapists and lead health-promoting programmes. This leap in competence makes them extremely valuable to employers.

The salary outlook: what do you really earn?

Income in the fitness sector was long a well-kept secret. With the establishment of the federal professional certificate, however, clear salary bands have developed. Salaries vary depending on canton, age and specific area of responsibility, but can be represented in well-founded average values (all figures in CHF, gross per month at a 100 percent workload).

Career level

Average gross salary

Typical profile

Fitness trainer entry-level (Basic)

approx. 4'000.- to approx. 4'300.- (CHF 25.00 / h)

Career starter after basic training, supervision of the training floor.

Higher education (Advanced / SVBO)

from approx. 4'300.- (from CHF 26.00 / h)

Extended qualifications, specific expertise, health training.

Specialist in movement and health promotion / centre manager

from approx. 4'800.-

State-recognised professional responsibility, supervision of risk groups, strong leadership qualities

As the table shows, the qualification as a specialist often means, compared to the mere instructor, a direct salary jump of 1'000.- to 1'500.- francs per month.

3 factors that significantly influence your salary as a specialist

Your certificate on the wall is only half the battle. How much really lands in your account at the end of the month depends on the following factors:

  • Additional responsibility and leadership: The highest salaries in employment are achieved by specialists who, alongside training supervision, also take on management tasks. If you lead quality management (such as Qualicert certifications) for the studio or take on the technical leadership of the trainer team, your market value rises enormously.
  • Geographical location: As in most industries, there is also a clear urban-rural divide in the fitness sector. In the economic centres such as Zurich, Zug or Basel, the entry salaries for specialists are often higher than in more rural cantons. This is offset, however, by higher living costs.
  • The employer's business model: Depending on the business model and responsibility, the salary can also vary accordingly.

The return on investment (ROI): is the training worth it?

The training to become a specialist in movement and health promotion is not cheap. The costs for the preparatory modules and the federal examination can amount to 7'000.- to 12'000.- francs (depending on the provider)

The calculation nevertheless pays off extremely quickly:

Thanks to the person-based funding of the Confederation (SERI), after taking the federal examination you receive up to 50 percent of the eligible course costs reimbursed by the state – regardless of whether you pass the examination or not.

So if after reimbursement you have invested around 3'500.- to 6'000.- francs yourself and your salary rises by 500.- francs per month after graduation, the entire training has already paid for itself after half a year to a year.

Conclusion: the foundation for a lifelong career

Anyone who does not want to end up in a professional dead end in their mid-40s in the fitness sector must continue their education. The federal professional certificate as a specialist in movement and health promotion is the safest way to break out of the low-wage sector of the industry. You not only earn significantly more, but also secure highly exciting fields of activity in prevention, build up a crisis-proof profile and create the perfect basis for later self-employment or even a master's degree.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can I work independently as a Personal Trainer with the professional certificate?

Yes, absolutely. The federal professional certificate is a strong seal of quality that gives you a massive competitive advantage on the open market. As an independent specialist in Personal Training you can charge hourly rates between 120.- and 180.- francs. In addition, you enjoy significantly higher trust among doctors who could potentially refer patients to you than a trainer with a simple online licence.

Do I automatically get the Qualicert or Qualitop recognition through the qualification?

Yes. The qualification as a specialist in movement and health promotion far exceeds the methodical and medical requirements of the health insurance certifiers (such as Qualicert or Qualitop). You are thereby entitled to supervise clients in such a way that they can reclaim prevention contributions for their fitness subscription or their Personal Training from their supplementary insurance.

How long does it take to reach the federal professional certificate?

That depends on your prior knowledge. If you start from scratch, you first complete the Fitness- und Bewegungstrainer Basic training, gain practical experience and then take the preparatory modules for the federal examination. On average, career changers need, alongside their job, about 2 to 3 years before they can sit the final professional examination (5000 h of professional practice are required for admission).

Will I be placed on an equal footing with medical staff through the professional certificate?

No. You are and remain a specialist for training and prevention, not a therapist or doctor. You may not make diagnoses or treat acute injuries (that is the field of physiotherapy or medicine). Your speciality is to build up, after a medical diagnosis or therapy, the long-term, health-promoting training in order to avoid relapses and increase the client's quality of life.
